Krishnan

I am glad that you have liked my comments. I am unworthy of any praise. Whatever little I have learned, it is all Sri Krishna's grace. Good luck

Dear dcindia,
I was highly  elated by your reponse. I am flabbergasted by the knowledge that you possess of the Geetha. As you have rightly said doubts form the basic starting point of every man and its resolution some times takes yeons and some even die with out any better or worse understanding. Your enunciation informs me of one thing. That these mental conflicts are as old as human history. Living through it,bettering our under-standing and revising our thoughts is a continous process. There does not seem to be any ultimate finality. Some times I tend to think if it has any thing to with personal mundane experience or the energy possessed at that point of time. Thank you for dusting my old blog and shedding more light on matters that I have not been able to pursue with any great steadfastness.

Dear Krishnan

I apologize for the long delay in responding. I simply did not check Sulekha for some time.
You have written a heart-wrenching personal story. Life has successes, but it is  mainly a collection of failures and missed opportunities. No missed opportunity hurts us at the very foundation more than the Spiritual ones.

We all have doubts. If we did not have doubts, we would either be fools or be counted among the wise. Doubts lead us to seek answers. In the Gita, Sri Krishna said that doubts have to be slashed with the sword of knowledge (4.41-42).  As you know, those are the doubts of jnana-yoga. As Sri Krishna described in the Gita,  jnana-yoga starts when the aspirant goes to visit the tattva-darshi jnani (wise seers of spiritual truths) (4. 34). He instructs us (upadesh) about the path of jnana-yoga, the experiences one gets in this path, and how one should go about following the  path. These instructions dispel the first level of doubts, those coming from absolute cluelessness.  This is Shravana according to Acharya Sankara. Then, the jnana-yogi sits down to be in communion with the Atman. Acharya Sankara said that the yogi does two things: manana (think) and nididhyasana. There is no English for nididhyasana, as it has no equivalent in Christianity. Most people translate nididhyasana as deep introspection, but that does not describe it. As described by Sri Krishna, in nididhyasana, the yogi receives revelatory knowledge in the Atman (4.38). The nididhyasana reveals the deep Truths and those bits of knowledge becomes the sword for slashing ignorance. Ignorance and doubts persist even for the advanced jnana-yogi, otherwise, Sri Krishna would not have said that after slashing ignorance with jnana, the yogi should establish himself in karmayoga (4.42).  The really incredible part of this message is that many jnana-yogis consider karmayoga as inferior, but that is not so according to Sri Krishna. In any case, the revelatory knowlede obtained by manana and nididhyasana slash more doubts, about which a beginner would not have initially thought of.

Krishnan, the Divine Life Society Guruji has initiated you in a special type of jnana-yoga, and the pecularity of jnana-yoga is that the major part of Spiritual progresss depends on the yogi, otherwise, Sri Krishna would not have said "kaalena aatmani vindati" (4.38).  That is, the yogi gets to know in time. Guru-kripa may help, but the real progress is made through your own yogic efforts. Your writing this article now, makes it clear that it the teachings you have received from your Guruji needed a long time to remove some of your doubts, and they left a lot of your doubts untouched. If you can finally accept the path of jnana-yoga, it is not too late to start manana and nididhyasana. Good luck! God is within and around you.

Dear palahali,
That is probably why they say the twenties is the dangerous phase of a man's life when he is possessed of the enormous energy to under take any adventure irrespective of the consequences he may have to face after-wards and hence duly reined- in by the elders. The doubts inflame passions that are hard to subside and for some the fire dies down in later years either by fulfilment or denouement and for some like a meteor that burns itself  endothermically Thanks for the visit and sharing your thoughts..

Vrry intresting blog.  I had gone to Rishikesh and Hardwar in my early 20s. I was not religious but some basic questions( ' existentialist ')  werre entering my life. Renunciaiton was one idea I was 'toy'ing with. But I was repeleled when I saw some of the sanyasis in Rishikesh I  But I did receive some solace from our cultural heritage like the river Ganga itself. Regards

Dear Scribbly,
Thank you for the everlasting wish, if only, one can enact a Prahaladh. But such a long life and a tottering frame would spell misery to the one who has a soul with out a physical role  compared to the one that reaches the hole on completion of his goal.!
