Since the advent of Niel Armstrong in company with Edwin Aldrin stepping on the moon and declaring that a " small step for man - a great leap for mankind  " the space odyssey has become a great saga in which the two powerful nations on earth have in good competition contributed all their might to explore space and ultimately in co-operation with 16 nations built the International space station, a model of which is displayed at the Lyndon Johnson Space centre at Houston, Texas. It is a wonderful scientific achievement to observe how difficult it is to discharge even the basic daily duties like cooking ,eating and even taking a shower or visiting the toilet in such an environ where weightlessness caused by total loss of gravitational force is intelligently handled. A decade back walking in space was considered a great feat while to-day the astronauts perform complicated engineerig tasks repairing and installing heavey equipment while being suspended in thin air !.The loss of communication and control while the Appollo 13 was in space, attracted world wide attention  and the later space flight when a young and beloved American school teacher along with other spacemen were killed while the space vehicle dis-integrated during launch and not to be forgotten the least, the breaking up of the space vehicle, eight minutes before landing and falling in to many parts over Texas consuming the precious life of Kalpana Chawla of Karnal, whose meteoric rise was synonymous with an immigrant's adventure are, but mile stones in the history of space voyage originally confined to the pages of fiction by authors like George Orwell. They were also indicative of the limits of human endeavour and the sacrifice of  humanity to attain greater heights in the pursuit of the un-known and worth emulating, by every nation . We owe these men and woman, who had put their safety and comfort of "Terra Firma" behind, to undertake  such hazardous adventure in exploring space to enlarge the horizon of knowledge, much more than an approbation. As one who was present at the Mission Control at Houston, during the return of Atlantis in 2000, I am greatly excited by the present launching.
